Well, this article was bound to be created eventually. Actually, I sensed God telling me to write about this, as there many Christians out there who watch pornography, but spiritually they feel like they are in a loosing battle.
In case you have not already caught on, I am not against all forms of pornography. The other day, I was thinking to myself, about how long it actually took for God to get me to the place I am currently at. You see, I started out like most every other Christian out there, in that I believed all pornography was evil. However, after many years of actually studying scripture and praying probably 1000 times about it, I discovered, no, actually not all pornography is evil.
To give you an idea just how long it took God to get me to this place, it was back in 1998 when I first started noticing that God did not always seem to condemn pornography in my mind. I heard God quite well back then and over the years have become even more in tune with his voice. To give you an idea, he has told me many things about people, situations and even things that happened in the future and so far its been very accurate (even things I did not want to believe or accept). Ironically, back then, while I was in college, I lived in a place where TV was more of a luxury, so it was not like we had many channels and did not exactly have time to watch pornography. Actually, believe it or not, I don't think I actually watched a porn video while I was in college, not even once, the whole time I was there.. However, I did look at some nude photos, which I sensed God had no problem with, even though my "standard" Christian teaching was raising red flags.. I do remember one time, a neighbor watching pornography and having it really loud. I could not concentrate on my work (gee I wonder why). The next day I told him about it and he found it rather humorous.
So, you have an idea of what kind of guy I was back then and now. Something even less common I did back then was I used to literally preach on the streets. I was considered a gung-ho Christian. I was leader of one of the Christian groups on campus and was friends with leaders of other Christian organizations on campus. I don't actually preach on the street much anymore.. During College I started to really get into internet ministry and ever since then, that has been my focus. One of my Christian websites I created receives about 250,000 visits a month or about 3 million hits a month. It is not a Top 10 website, but it is definitely one of the higher ranked Christian websites. I think Crosswalk.com has about 40 to 60 times as much traffic as I receive (and they are about number 1 among Christian websites).
I was and still am one of those die hard Christians. So, it took God probably about 10 years to fully convince me, not all pornography is evil. Quite literally, my mind could not comprehend how it could not be a sin. So, I had the gift of hearing God well, but I would question over and over and over what I was hearing from God on this topic. All that time, I would inch a little towards where he led, when he pointed out scriptures to me on the topic. And I see now, He is right.. For the scriptures, if you actually study them, do not condemn all forms of pornography. I go into great detail in this article here proving this point.
And reflecting on this topic and assuming I am actually correct in what I am saying here, it would be obvious that such articles as these are despirately needed. When you have people in the church anymore trying cleanse everyone of sexual thoughts, yet ironically ignoring things that are likely more sinful. Haven't you noticed, the church seems to function a lot like a chain store or fast food joint? Did Jesus drill in your head to goto church twice a week, tithe ten percent and make sure you present yourself as a "good" person for everyone to see? Or did maybe Jesus teach us to be merciful, care for those less fortunate and to preach the gospel?
I just remembered recently going to a marriage counselor with my wife. I find this pretty humorous. My wife and I have been having some problems lately. Actually, I really do not want to get into all of that. However, what I found so funny was how anti-sex this Assembly of God church seemed to be. I attend this church currently on Sunday nights, and I hear people, here and there, mentioning "accountability" partners. And, I was stupid enough to ask what they were talking about one time while we ate together after church. He mentioned it had something to do with pornography accountability. I found this to be interesting. When I was younger, they had no such things.. At any rate, while I was in this marriage counseling session, she mentioned something about putting software on my computer to monitor my "online activities".. She asked me, would I accept such a thing. So you realize, pornography was not exactly our marriage problems, but rather other issues. But, what struck me later was the humor of it all. She was asking me to have my online activities emailed to someone that I did not even know. LOL. Doesn't that sound a little like the "confession box" in Catholic churches? Seriously, take a step back. Does that make any sense? Do you see the humor in such things as I do? With no other activity would ANY CHRISTIAN allow such a thing. It would be considered insane. But, because pornography is such a problem in churches today, they are now resorting to surveillance!! Big "Church" Brother is watching you. LOL.
Well, let me alleviate your pornography conscience problem. Not all pornography is sinful. Now your pastor might want to throw holy water on me for saying this, but it literally is true. This is a very deeply inground belief system. One that is drilled in us and we do not even realize it. Since the time of St. Augustine, the church decided sex was evil. Over the years, the stranglehold the church had on people's sex life has been loosened some.. To give you an idea, at its peak, there was a time when it was said that it was a SIN to have sex with your wife in daylight. It was a sin to have sex with your wife for anything other than procreation. It was a SIN for you to undress her (now try to figure that one out)! If I read you the whole list, you would be shocked and astounded. People were actually put to death for such actions!
Were these doctrines of God? Or perhaps, where these doctrines of demons, as was prophesied in 1 Timothy 4? Would it shock you to realize, that you have had a doctrine and philosophy ingrained in you that might just be literally something the devil thought up? Would it shock you to know in the early days of America, people actually invented devices to keep young men from having hard-ons? Contraptions to put on your son's body to cause him pain? Does that not strike you as twisted? Or would it shock you to know that Kellog's corn flakes were invented to curb sexual appetite? Where did this obsession with controlling people's sex life come from? It has the intensity of a Jehovah's witness on your doorstep or even a Mormon trying to convert you. Could such a motivation be from God or is it more likely a doctrine of the Devil?
Doctrines of the Devil? Whoa. You never heard that one before did you? Yes, believe it or not, the doctrine that St. Augustine brought forth has been a cancer in the church since his time. You see St. Augustine, when he was a young Christian, still had not given up his sexual vices. He was a man who, prior to becoming a Christian and also a bit into his Christian walk, was obsessed with sex, even partaking in orgies. Before Augustine became a Christian, he was of a certain Gnostic sect called the Manicheans. The Manicheans condemned marriage and procreation, but participated in fornication, orgies and incest (Basically, they considered sex evil, as it is part of physical world, however, they considered themselves enlightened in the spirit, so it did not matter what they did with their bodies. Yes, twisted..). So, instead of taking a balanced approach to the topic of sex, he turned his life into a Crusade against sex. He turned his theology into one where sex is always shameful or sinful in every instance. Basically, he took the Gnostic philosophy to a more pure form, saying and living as if ALL sex is evil (as it is physical), and the spirit is good (avoid sex, even in marriage) (see Gnostic Dualistic Heresy / Manichaeism / Docetism / Etc). Further, he taught that Adam and Eve's sin in the garden of Eden was sex. However, anyone who actually studies the scriptures and is honest, knows that is not correct. Quite literally, St. Augustine taught all people should be celibate and that if you even think about sex (with even your wife), you should ask God for forgiveness. Is it too hard to conceive of the possibility that St. Augustine still had a problem with doctrine after becoming a Christian and tainted all Christian doctrine ever since? I believe this passage here underscores this point. (Reference Reading)
So, we know the root all any theological mindset is where we should look. And Augustine is the father of this theology, which he derived from a non-Christian source: Plotinus. If we look at 1 Timothy 4, we see that it says:
1 TIMOTHY 4:1 - 5
4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
4:2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
4:3 Forbidding to marry, [and commanding] to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
4:4 For every creature of God [is] good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
4:5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
And also..
COLOSSIANS 2:20 - 23
2:20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
2:21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not;
2:22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?
2:23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.
Now, these are going to be our scriptures to cut at the root of this deeply ingrained philosophy and doctrine taught indirectly within the church today.
If you research church history, you discover that through the Catholic Church, sex became a sin, and also people were told not to marry. Priests who were married even had concubines at one time and multiple wives (polygamy), until Pope Benedict VIII issued a rule prohibiting children of priests from inheriting property. Pope Gregory VII banned marriages for priests ( Second Lateran Council held in 1139 - forbidding priest from marrying). Further Pope Innocent II voided all the current priests' marriages and forced all new priests to divorce their wives. I believe this is the beginning of this prophecy and the "Second Lateran Council" eerily fulfills this prophecy to perfection. Why did the Pope through this Council bann priests from marrying? Because he was afraid they would have children who could inherit church property. Quite literally, it was for reason of MONEY that marriage was condemned. Further, declaring sex a sin made for a lot of people sinning and having to repent, which also gave the church another way to make money. For Augustine provided the framework for sex being intrinsically sinful, which led to many in the church being celibate. And, as you can see in the prophecy, this is a doctrine of the devil. (Further Reading) Consider the fact that the greatest persecutor of true Christians was the Organized Catholic Church, so why is it we accepted their doctrine on sex, hook, line and sinker? Protestants are called by this name because they were "protesting" against Catholic Church doctrine and teachings. So, I don't leave anyone out, there is also the Orthodox church, which the Catholic church split from and then from there, Protestant churches split from the Catholic church. I have relatives and friends who are Orthodox (nothing bad to say there).
So, this doctrine of the devil has continued to pervade itself within the church in various forms. This is why, ironically, Christians are so anti-pornography, yet end up hypocritical as they watch it. I just recently read a statistic from the Barna Group who did a biblical worldview survey. It said that only 0.5% of Christians with a biblical worldview consider pornography not a sin, in word. But, when it came to deed, Christians with a biblical worldview watch pornography HALF AS MUCH as non-Christians! What happened to that 0.05%? Also, if you look at the statistical links above, you will also notice, people are far quicker to condemn pornography than just about any other sin that was in the survey!
HERE IS THE MATH:
- 99.95% of all Christians with a biblical worldview believe pornography is evil. 0.05% think it is acceptable.
- 61% of all other people believe pornography is evil. Or, in other words, 39% of other people think it is acceptable.
- Christians with a biblical worldview are "two times less" likely to view pornography.
- Assuming the "other people" watch pornography in consistance with their viewpoint of it being OK, it would mean that 19.5% of all Christians with a biblical worldview watch pornography.
- As an alternative and possibly more accurate assumption, lets say that 60% of all "other people" watch pornography (even though only 39% said they approved of it), it would mean that 30% of all Christians with a biblical worldview watch pornography.
- Now, I have taken a myriad of very advanced mathematical classes, so you can be assured the above is very correct, assuming the statistics provided by The Barna Group are correct.
- Here is a statistic from another source that seems to mirror this 30% figure (50% of men, 20% of women).
- What can we conclude? Obviously, many people are not consistant in their beliefs on this topic.
I am not here to condemn you. But, the fact is, you are watching it, and tell everyone you are against it. That is a contradiction. And, you have to ask yourself, WHY are you doing it? To be honest, I recall doing it myself a couple times, particularly one time while I was in college.. Telling people I do not watch it, but I was playing word games. Depends on what the word "is" is, right?
Well let me help you out here.. As you already know, sex is something that God created a desire for inside everyone of us. It is very similar to our desire for food or sleep. The Devil knows this. That is why he decided to steal sexual fulfillment from Christians by declaring it a sin. What better way to screw you up? Its like the Devil convincing you it is a sin to eat or sleep! You are guaranteed to loose! And do not the statistics above allude to this very point?
Since sex is not intrinsically sinful and we have been given certain freedoms in Christ, the Devil had to resort to lies. He had to get this teaching out there and sear it into the minds of people who goto church everywhere. God created sex. God does not have a bunch of rules on sex. He DOES have rules, but not the myriad you have been taught.
It is very deeply rooted in your mind. Let me prove it to you. What do you see when you read this Bible passage?
"5:27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart."
Here is an assumption that is in your mind, but it is not in the text. You believe he is talking about sex directly here in this passage, or atleast the thought of sex, don't you?
Well, actually, I don't blame you for assuming that. Those who translated the greek in this passage used the term "lust" when it should have been more properly translated "desire" or "covet".
Long story short, if you actually study the greek, THIS is what the Bible passage actually says:
"5:27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery (unlawful intercourse w/ another man's wife): 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh(sets mind upon) on a woman(wife) to lust(desire or covet) after her hath committed adultery (unlawful intercourse w/ another man's wife) with her already in his heart."
Unlawful intercourse does not just refer to sex. It is refering to any type of compromising relationship with another's wife. Could be she talks to you a little too nicely. Could be she likes doing things for you. Could be you take special interest in her beyond just friendship. If you are taking compromising steps towards her, you are committing adultery in your heart.
But, you assumed it was talking only about sexual thoughts. Why? Because it has been engrained in you. You have been actually brainwashed a little on this topic.
Do you want more proof? How about this. Is it a sin for you to think about your friend's car? His house? Is it a sin for you to think about driving his car? To watch TV in his house? NOW, ask yourself, is it a sin to think about your neighbor's wife? Actually, no, it is not a sin to just think about her. However, that does not mean you should do it either (it is a temptation). So, what is the sin? The sin would be when you want to steal your friend's car or wife. Not, when you think about how nice his car or wife is.
So, adultery in your heart is when you DECIDE you are going to take your neighbor's wife in some way, shape or form.. Everything in the commandments is build on: love God, love neighbor, or on the flip side: do not steal from God, do not steal from your neighbor.
Now, let me ask you something. When you watched pornography, afterwards, did you ever literally want to get to know the woman in the video? Did you want to look her up online, goto her house, try to get to know her?
Of course not, because that was not the intent of your watching pornography. Your intent was not to take her for yourself. You just thought she was hot and you got off watching her. It isn't rocket science what your intentions were.
Now if you thought about your friends brand new Lamborghini or million dollar house, did you sin? Or, would it be, when you turn that desire into a desire with intent to take?
If you look at the greek behind this passage you discover that the desire mentioned has an "action" component to it. It is a desire that conceives in your heart. It is when you decide, I am going to steal her in some way shape or form. So, it is not noticing or admiring her beauty.
Consider this. When it comes to your neighbor's wife, she is close by. Obviously, it is not wise to fantasize about her, as it could lead you to desiring to take her in some way. However, with pornography, the woman could live in another State or even country. It would be a very rare situation that, by chance, she lives near you. If you see a woman in an erotic video, it is highly likely you do not know her. Also, you are not trying to get to know her. It is far far less tempting than say a woman near to where you live, as you do not see her during the day. Your intent with watching pornography is sexual arousal, not a relationship or to take someone's wife. So, the temptation to desire to take a woman in a porn video is minimal.
So, sexually thinking about a woman nearby is potentially dangerous and could lead you to sinning in your heart (desiring to take her). However, the thoughts about her are temptations that lead to the sin, and are not sins in and of themselves. But with a pornstar, your thoughts also are not sins in of themselves and consider also, they are really not temptations either, as they will not lead you to desiring to take her for yourself. Well, atleast from my experience, I have never wanted to get to know a woman I saw in a porn movie. So, I see it as something that is a minimalized temptation at worst.
GUIDELINES FOR WATCHING PORNOGRAPHY:
I hope this logic is making sense to you. OK, so what would be some guidelines to watching pornography?
- First, pornography is fantasy. Leave it that way. - The reason for this rule is because Matthew 5:28 is built on the idea of NOT coveting your neighbor's wife. Coveting is not sexual thoughts or fantasy, but rather desiring to take another man's wife (literally). The sin of coveting occurs when the person truly desides in his heart, he is going to go after a married woman. Therefore, when watching pornography, realize, some of these women are likely married and the simplest way to avoid sin is to leave it as fantasy. If you start to become a "fan" of a certain woman and start to try to meet her, etc, not exactly a good idea. As then, there is real potential for temptation and sin, as she could be married and you could start to truly desire her, which would be committing adultery in your heart. I discuss the married woman factor above and also in article1.htm. - Leviticus 18:20
- Believe it or not, more than one women having sex with one man is not sinful in general - As polygamy is not a sin. I prove it in this article here. So, yes, believe it or not, people in the Old Testament had multiple wives and likely a few did such things. Of course, this argument on polygamy is controversial and if your mind is not fully convinced or you think polygamy is a sin, it would be a sin for you to watch such things(because whatsoever is not done of faith, is sin). - Polygamy Bible Passages
- A no brainer: Sex with animals is obviously a sin - Should not have to mention this, but there are actually people who watch such wickedness. There was even some guy recently in my state who was arrested for distributing such garbage. - Leviticus 18:23
- Men lying with men is sin - Gay movies are sinful, so obviously, playing it out in your head would be also. - Leviticus 18:22 To be fair, there are a couple arguments that gays use to claim that these passages are refering to temple prostitution, however, with my research, no matter how many ways you argue it, it seems always to be a weak viewpoint (they use David and Jonathan's relationship to claim this was a covenant between two men before God and they are gay. However, I believe that in reality, it is more likely they were just very close and non-sexual and the covenant was a friendship covenant, not a marriage. It should be noted, though, a couple of the things Jonathan and David did would be considered strange today). - Wikipedia - David and Jonathan. The main problem I see is that there is no example BEFORE Leviticus of followers of God being gay, and Leviticus (no matter how you slice it) prohibits men with men (Leviticus 18:22). They claim that it is in reference to Egypt's system of living, which is cited in the beginning verses, but even if that was the case, it is the first law and even mention of men with men in the Bible and it condemns it. God is the same yesterday today and forever. Their argument is it is "contextualized" to Israel with relation to the surrounding cultures. They cite two examples of other commands listed in Leviticus that were violated by followers of God PRIOR to Leviticus, indicating it is a contexualized situation. However, one of the commands was refering to the fact next of kin could marry in the beginning, which was a requirement at first just to propagate the species. The other, I believe they cited wrongly. Further, just because there is context, doesn't mean God would allow gay activity otherwise.. So, to me, the arguement is weak and not sustainable. Their strongest point is considering how Jonathan and David were interacting.. Truly, I would not do such things with a friend, so it does seem strange, however, we should not impose our assumptions or add to the story, simply because it furthers our viewpoint. Perhaps it is God's way of saying, men can be close in rare situations, however, not sexually speaking. My argument against this David and Jonathan interaction argument is this.. Can you think of any guy and girl that were very close, yet it was platonic and not sexual? I can think of some. Therefore, it is possible such a thing could occur between two men on a strictly platonic close friendship level.
- What about woman with woman? - Although lesbianism lifestyle is sinful, strangely, in the list of sexual sins in the Bible, it never says woman can not lay with woman. However, I believe the reason it is never directly stated is because then polygamy could be condemned (i.e. ~ two or more women with one man). So, for the sake of polygamy, atleast, God left it out. As you know, men enjoy such things as seeing/having more than one woman sexually at the same time. You can not tell me that during King Solomon's reign that he never had such an idea, while being married to 1000 wives.. You and I both know, he got it on with more than one woman at a time. So, the lesbian lifestyle is a sin, because it denies God's design, as discussed in Romans 1, however, a woman having sex with another woman is not intrinsically a sin, in of itself, it appears. But, what about Romans 1:26? Like I said before, in the Old Testament, sexual sins are defined. When God wrote it, he only said men with men. He never said woman with woman. HOWEVER, when he wrote about sex with animals he said man shall not lie with animals and also woman shall not lie with animals. So, if God clearly gave examples of both men and woman with animals as being sin, why not woman with woman? It would be not consistant for God to at one point in a paragraph establish that he is speaking of men and women separately and in another section, using men represent men and women. See what I mean? Further, it says in Romans 1 that it was "against nature", which could also refer to sex with animals(is this not against nature?). So to assume, "against nature" means sex between women, would be adding to the text (seeing no commandment is given directly anywhere against the action). So, sex between women appears to not be a sin from a scriptural standpoint. However, a lifestyle of two woman being in serious relationship together without a man, that is an act of rebellion against God's design as pointed out in Romans 1 (not refering to 26, but surrounding verses). So, I would say, this one is similar to the topic of "eating meat offered to idols". Meaning, it may not be a sin to watch, however, most would look at it as wrong, as it bears the offensive nature to many.
- Bondage? Not sure on this one. Extreme versions most likely sinful - I guess it depends what they are doing. I would suggest the principle, "when in doubt, throw it out".
- Two men having sexual intercourse with the same woman - On this one, this is against God's design of one man and one woman or the secondary permitted design of polygamy (one man and more than one woman). There is no design for two men and one woman anywhere in scripture, so its against God's design. - Leviticus 18:22
- Group sex: Multiple men and women having sex with each other - This is a lot like the multiple men with one woman scenerio mentioned above. If any of the women are married, they are sinning, as they are cheating on their husbands. If they are not married it is against God's desire, it is unwise, and risky. Watching in a movie, obviously, there is only the risk of warping the mind and conscience potentially. God's desire would be for no Christian to do it for a myriad of reasons. There is risk of confusion in one's mind on morals, potential pregnancy, sexual addiction, adultery if one is married, etc). If the men are interacting sexually, it would be considered gay or confusion, as men are never to interact sexually. Also, you can see this is a slippery slope that leads to sin. God's design is one man and one woman in marriage (ideal) and secondary design is more than one woman and one man (polygamy). All other relationship designs are not from God. So, this here is just playing with fire. - Leviticus 18:22
- Some person lying with their relative - Believe it or not, this one needs to be mentioned also. Relatives having sex in a movie (for instance, two hot twins with one guy) would be a sin according to God's law. I think this one is pretty rare. About the only example I could think of was the twin one. - Leviticus 18:7 - 16
- Transvestite or Transsexual sex is a sin to watch - As it is a perversion of God's design. It is taking a man and woman's role and confusing it, which is a form of rebellion. As Transvestites are males pretending to be women to have role reversal sex, which would be a form of gay sex (male with male) - Leviticus 18:22, - 1 Corinthians 6:9 - In this scripture, it tells of those who will not be saved. Fornicators(sexually immoral), Adulterers(steal another's wife), Effeminate(Drag, Trans type activity), etc.
- Another no brainer: Child pornography is evil - This goes against God's design also, as they are not physically, mentally or sexually developed until around the age of 18. Pyschologists say mental capacity for responsibility does not fully develop until around 18 or later, so they are not equipped to make such decisions or know entirely if they are being manipulated by evil men or women. That is why the principle of children being under their parents care until a certain age is in place in scripture. I discuss this on article 1. Further, there is scripture that forbids parents from sexually exploiting their children for money (can't seem to remember where it is located). Also, scripture forbids people from making merchandise of their neighbor.
- Erotic movies can also have bad storylines - Obviously, some erotic movies have certain storylines and themes. These should also be carefully considered when watching such a movie. For some of them have obviously evil themes. An obvious example: A movie where a married woman is cheating on her husband or vice versa.
- Erotic movies having to do with Sacred Sex/Tantra/Etc. - To put it mildly, the whole evil of many of the sexual pagan practices, such as orgies, had more to do with idol worship than the sex act itself. And Sacred Sex, Tantra, etc are all putting an idolatrous spin on sex. God likely hates idolatry worse than an evil sex act, so by participating in such things, you are likely performing a form of idolatry with a sex act. Temple prostitution is often what is meant by fornication in scripture and that is why fornication was often used to mean idolatry as well. So, the "root" of the sexual sin God hates most is mixing a worship to a false God with sex. Also, often, people misunderstand the word "orgie" or "revellings" as discussed in 1 Peter 4:3 or Galatians 5:21. Basically, it is talking about a party, such as seen by Moses when he came down from the Mountain with the 10 Commandments. The main focus, idolatry and then doing all manner of drunken, crazy, lewd/sexual acts to praise the false God and often leading to some trance like state. This is what an orgie really is per biblical terminology. Today, I think maybe some examples of this would be the Festivals seen in India (although often, no sexual component). One time, I actually walked into a building with one of these taking place and I saw one of these people in a trance like state. I also felt the presense of something very evil, as I felt sick just being in the building (the moment I walked in prior to even knowing what was going on). Another example, maybe USA side, would be what is seen in New Orleans on Fat Tuesday (Marti Gra). Although, with Marti Gra, it seems to be a weak form of an orgy, as there really isn't an idolatrious atmosphere. So, it could be sort of a shell of a true orgy, as people do not worship a false diety directly or fall into a trance like state.
- Movies that portray violence, rape, torture, etc are evil - I believe this is intrinsically clear, as we are to love our neighbors as ourselves and this would be the exact opposite. It is also a temptation for certain demographics of men and women to get into such things, which could lead to deeper sin. This is where Ted Bundy got off track before becoming a serial killer, which he admitted to in an interview with James Dobson (Focus on the Family) about 20 years ago.
- Your Witness & Other Considerations - If you are married, consider first, why you are watching pornography. Is there a problem in your marriage and you are trying to escape or avoid dealing with it? Perhaps you have tried to work through a problem. Or maybe, your wife or husband doesn't have a problem with it? You should always try to be one with your spouse and your marriage is more important than such things as this. So, make sure your motives are good. If for instance, your spouse refuses to have sex with you on purpose and you tried to discuss it with them, and they are just being stubborn, you still have a need that needs to be met somehow. I would say the "lest Satan tempt you" scripture is refering to you finding another person to have an affair with. So, actually, pornography can be a "fix" to keep you from being tempted to get into an affair with another person. Also, there is the consideration of you and your spouse actually watching erotic videos together. I would say it is far more likely a man would be willing more than a woman, however, there are women who watch pornography also, including Christian women. Then, there is your Christian witness. This also needs to be considered. Of course, if it is a private matter for you, others need not know. You are not required to tell people of your private activities. However, if it is something that could compromise your Christian witness, then it is something you should avoid. Of course, this is a balanced topic, as you could try to make an argument here that I am "compromising" my witness. However, actually, I am providing a very biblical defense for my position and I have seen no argument from anyone that can poke holes in this one or defeat it. So my witness still stands, because if I am right about this, how is that compromising my witness for Christ? Consider also, you do not know who I am, so I am also not compromised in that manner either.
It could very easily be you do not agree with some of the above. Maybe you think only scenes where a woman is showing herself naked (alone) is acceptable. Or, possibly, it could be you think only scenes where one man is with one woman is acceptable. If you see the standard as being tighter than what I wrote above, that is great, because it would be best for you to only do things in faith. For whatsoever is not done of faith, is sin. If you personally thought driving a car over 60 miles an hour was a sin, do not do it. Sounds like a crazy notion, but there was actually a time where people thought such things (beginnings of the car industry). There are churches that think dancing is evil, women with short hair is sinful, etc. I would disagree with all such notions, except maybe the longer hair requirement for women. The point is that if you are convinced in your mind something is wrong, don't do it. If one day you read the scriptures and God enlightens you to something you might have missed, great. Just make sure to always have God first in your life. As that is what is most important.
